Featuring the Beating Wing Orchestra, Mojito, & the Global Grooves Master-Class performance
PLUS Virtual Migrants and  Global Star Sounds DJ - World Set

Following an intensive weekend of full-on Samba Reggae workshops, the Global Grooves team and participants bring you a blistering live performance of Bahian beats and boogie brought to the Northwest. This performance features leading international percussion and dance tutors from Brazil and beyond, and is guaranteed to get you grooving! The evening will also open up suppressed perspectives on the global inequalities of climate change with VJ and beat-driven dialogues from Virtual Migrants  with two fantastic headlining acts The Beating Wing Orchestra and Mojito.

About the performers:

The Beating Wing Orchestra (BWO) - Beating Wing Orchestra is a unique Mancunian ensemble with refugee, migrant, and local members, speaking a global music vocabulary. With musicians from Iran, Cameroon, Bangladesh, and Brazil, their music forges connections between the City's rich mix of communities. The Orchestra recently performed two sell-out gigs at the Manchester International Festival 09, with the internationally acclaimed Malian duo Amadou and Mariam. Their debut was at MIF 07, receiving 5 star reviews for a commission by Palestinian composer Reem Kelani. The Orchestra was created in 2007 by Community Arts North West as part of the Exodus project.

Mojito are Manchester's foremost Afro-Cuban band bringing you the true taste of Cuba playing a scorching mix of salsa, timba, merengue, son and reggaeton which has packed dancefloors all over the UK. This show will also feature on guest vocals Arturo Martinez Cabrera who has sung with Clave y Guaguanco, Havana's finest rumba group; a sizzling show not to be missed!!

Virtual Migrants are a collaborative digital arts group that focus on themes of race, migration and globalisation, have presented and exhibited work internationally and work with music in a variety of ways.  Their new project “The Centre cannot Hold” is about the links between climate, global inequality and racism, and for this show they will intersperse parts of the evening with VJ material, recorded perspectives and experiences, audio underscores and beats relating to this theme.  Part 1 of their project will have just completed at Bristol’s Arnolfini gallery, and this Sunday night will take place during December’s controversial COP15 (the Conference of the Parties on Climate Change in Copenhagen) which in many ways will mark our future.  Virtual Migrants will integrate timely and critical interventions within this evening to connect with global and racial realities of the past, present and future and raise our consciousness through cultural interaction and participation.

Global Star Sound System is a bunch of DJs formed to bring the sounds of the globe to your doorstep.  Exploring the inter-connections between various global styles, the criteria for inclusion in our sets is based on quality, diversity, grooveability and the required vibe!  Expect to hear reggae, roots music, dub, hip hop, afro-Latin-world grooves, funk, soul, jazz, folk, rock, drum n bass, various electronic styles and anything else in between...

Bloco Novo is a dynamic and exciting group of drummers, dancers and community artists from Manchester.  Their vibrant and funky Afro-Latin and global grooves have wowed audiences’ right across the U.K.

About the Venue

Band On The Wall is is one of the cornerstones of Manchester's music scene for the greater part of the last century, it was at the centre of Manchester’s punk scene in the late 1970s when Buzzcocks, The Fall and Joy Division first played. Since then it has played host to many internationally acclaimed artists including Mica Paris, Bjork, Art Blakey, Carleen Anderson, John Martyn and countless others.

Closed in 2005 for redevelopment, the venue opens in September 2009 with state-of-the-art new facilities and incorporates The Picturehouse in the adjacent building that will provide a new social space and host complimentary events throughout the year. Band on the Wall will be the new home for the Global Grooves short courses.
