West African Funk Grooves - Tutor Leon Patel Course Content: Drawing upon rhythms and phrasing from traditional and contemporary West African percussion ensembles, this course is designed to give a more modern outlook on West African percussion styles. Participants will be guided through an exploration of a modern ‘funky’ percussive style, focusing on one arrangement with solo phrasing, technique work and complementary parts. Experience of hand drumming is essential for this course. Previous experience of Djembe or Timbau is an advantage Instruments used: Djembe & Dun-Dun We have very limited equipment available for use at this course. Leon is an experienced workshop leader in many styles of international percussion including Brazilian, West African, South Asian and Cuban percussion. Leon specialises in Afro-Brazilian Bloco styles and Candomblé studying extensively in the UK, Brazil and Africa and possessing over 10 years experience in facilitating workshops, master-classes and performances. Leon is also the Artistic Director of Global Grooves and has put together the entire programme of activity from scratch dedicating his time and skills voluntarily with his ongoing commitment to the development of international music and dance. His other cultural performance and workshop projects include Meninos Oldham and Bangdrum Workshops.
