Christmas Weekender

Sat 10th and Sun 11th December 2011


Global Grooves are proud to announce 2011’s Christmas Weekender!

With the opportunity to learn from a variety of tutors hailing from diverse percussion settings, this intensive series of eight mini-workshops is designed to offer musicians of all abilities and experience the opportunity to try out new styles, improve technique in instrument-specific classes, belt out songs from the Candomblé tradition and the North-east of Brazil, work within both hand drumming and stick drumming disciplines, and much more!


Following this rotational workshop programme, participants are also invited to perform elements of the mini-workshop material alongside a host of musicians at an evening showcase on Sun 11th Dec at Band On The Wall.

                       Sat 10th December:

Cuban Conga Drummingwith Andy Boothman           
...This workshop aims to develop hand techniques to produce distinct conga tones and introduce Afro Cuban rhythms.

Sounds of Capoeira with Leandro De Oliveira        …berimbau, pandeiro, atabaque, and songs from Capoeira…

Top-notch Timba with Leon Patel          

...with slaps that could crack a window, Leon Patel’s distinctive timba playing and workshop promise an introduction to Timba soloing and cheeky tricks to spice up your playing and build your repertoire. For the terrified to the advanced percussionist!


Rudiments for Snarewith Iain Mellor           

… stick tricks to impress! Well-known for his pipeband drumming heritage and volume, Iain’s long-awaited snare class promises plenty of rudiments, rolls, technique, and trickery!

                        Sun 11th December:

Côco Chegou’ with Holly Prest              

… Côco has arrived! To accompany the selection of call and response songs from the Côco tradition of Northeastern Brazil, this workshop boasts a small ensemble percussion arrangement to keep you on your (tapping) toes!


Sambateria’ with Eraldo Marques           

...as one of Manchester’s premier resident samba heads, Eraldo will deliver an authentic samba for the bateria, with special focus on tamborim technique and phrases.


Candomblé’ with Jon Hardeman           

Jon will present a specific rhythm and song sequence for one of the Orixas of Afro-Brazilian Candomblé , featuring lead drum parts and variations, support drum parts, and beautiful call and answer songs.


Orixa Grooves for the Bateria’ with Ravin Jayasuriya   

...Raz will present a groove that mixes elements from Brazilian & Cuban traditional, popular and carnival rhythms to be played on bateria instruments.
